Let me preface this by saying that saxophone quartets have never been one of my favorite ensemble - that is, until I started to research the Erie Saxophone Quartet. The Erie Saxophone Quartet is dedicated to promoting the saxophone as a classical chamber instrument. The group, which was formed at SUNY Fredonia in 2006, performs a combination of transcribed works, classical saxophone quartet repertoire, and contemporary works that have been commissioned by the group. Composers in their repertoire range from Bach to Phillip Glass. Its members are Sarah Marchitelli, alto; Rochester native Melissa Widzinski, baritone; Jacob Swanson, soprano; and Nicholas Pelton, tenor. The group's recordings show a thorough command of the saxophone by each member, and the ability to manipulate the instrument's sound when playing pieces from different time periods.
The Erie Saxophone Quartet play Friday, January 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Asbury First United Methodist. Free. eriequartet.com
