A cross-section of Upstate hip-hop bands are coming together to offer a sampler for discerning tastes. Locals The Blackened Blues eat hip-hop deep fried in jazz, while the members of Subsoil like theirs as a shot served in a dirty glass. Syracuse's Sophistafunk, like the name implies, prefers its hip-hop covered in a dripping layer of funk. This trio has been keeping it live in the Three-One-Five for just a couple years now. However, between putting out an album, winning the 2009 Syracuse Big Break Contest, signing with Syracuse University's Marshall Street Records, and opening for superstars like Fergie, it seems like the band is off to a good start. The show is hosted by DJ Tim Tones.
Sophistafunk play Friday, January 29, at 10 p.m. at Dubland Underground, 315 Alexander St. $6-10. 232-7550.
