I am constantly impressed by the abilities of young musicians in Rochester. Sometimes, I suppose, we take their achievement for granted, not realizing that Rochester is really very fortunate to have this kind of talent at the grade school level. This weekend some of Rochester's finest young musicians will be performing at Hochstein in the Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia's annual joint concert, led by Nancy Strelau and John Fetter respectively. The HYSO will be performing an homage to the upcoming Vancouver Olympic games, John Williams' "Olympic Fanfare," as well as selections from Bizet's "Carmen Suite" and the final movement of Shostakovich's Symphony 5. The Philharmonia's program includes two Mozart overtures, the Impressario and Abduction from the Seraglio.
Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra & Philharmonia plays Sunday, February 7 at 3 p.m. at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance, 50 N. Plymouth St. $5. hochstein.org
