Pianist extraordinaire Cyrus Chestnut is the son of a church organist and a church choir director, so it should be no surprise that even when he plays straight-ahead jazz it's infused with a gospel tinge. His latest album, "Spirit," is a wonderful solo exploration of contemporary inspirational music, with powerful performances of tunes like "Wade In The Water," "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," and "Lean On Me." When he visits Rochester, Chestnut and his trio will showcase both the secular and the sacred, with jazz Friday night at the Radisson and gospel Saturday night at Mt Olivet Baptist Church (141 Adams St, 6 p.m., $10-$20, 232-6742).
Cyrus Chestnut plays Friday, February 5, 8 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel, 120 E Main St. $10-$25. 733-7685, exodustojazz.com.
