POWER-POP: So Cow (2/23)

The force behind So Cow is Brian Kelly, a fresh-faced Irishman with mousy hair and standard-issue black-rimmed glasses. With that look, it's no surprise that snotty Replacements-esque snarl, girl-group harmonies, and the smartly acerbic melodies of indie-pop tinkerers Of Montreal all take roles in his power-pop vision. The through-line is Kelly's deadpan vocals and jangling guitar, and a wit that's more bursting flash fiction than lovey-dovey. If it can sometimes sound foreign, that's because it is - Kelly sings in Korean on certain songs as an homage to the country where he started the project just a few years back. As a songwriter, Kelly is on a prolific bender: he put together an 18-track self-titled release last year, and has since been dabbling with cover songs (Del Shannon's "Runaway"!) that are available online. A new record, "Meaningless Friendly," comes out mid-tour.

So Cow plays Tuesday, February 23, 9 p.m. at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $8-$10. 454-2966, bugjar.com.
