PSYCH-PUNK: Awesome Color & Tyvek (3/3)

Awesome Color is a trio that rectifies the opposites of psychedelic and punk music into a delightfully grooving medium. The result is a unique kind of terse enlightenment that draws inspiration from the primal rock of The Stooges then stretches it out with drone-y breakdowns and sitar-like leads. Home for the band is the omnivorous Ecstatic Peace record label run by Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), which will put out Color's forthcoming LP, "Massa Hypnos," in April. Similarly varied is Tyvek, a registered trademark for synthetic material, as well as a Detroit-based band that talks its way through angular post-punk. The band's poetry-inspired approach takes a variety of forms: sometimes thrash, sometimes chug, but always in flux. Handsome Jack also plays.

Awesome Color and Tyvek play Wednesday, March 3, at 8 p.m. at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $8-$10. 454-2966, bugjar.com.
