This concert has me psyched. As a classically trained musician who has spent the majority of her life playing the works of dead white guys, I have always enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about female composers. This concert will feature works by 19th century women composers Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, and Alma Mahler. These ladies, you might notice, all have famous last names - Fanny is Felix's sister, while Clara and Alma were married to their more famous counterparts. Also on the program is British violist and composer Rebecca Clarke, as well as Joan Tower and Libby Larsen, who are considered two of the most successful women composers working today. The performers include RPO principal violist Melissa Matson, Eastman faculty Pamela Kurau (soprano) and Kenneth Grant (clarinet), and Joseph Werner, RPO keyboardist and one of the Society's artistic directors. There is a pre-concert talk at 7p.m.
Rochester Chamber Society performs Sunday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Ave. $10-$30. 377-6770
