FOLK/POP: Monologue Bombs

The Monologue Bombs started out as one lone Monologue Bomb - Raleigh, North Carolina's Scott Phillips. Phillips did his thing on the piano, accordion, and guitar, but has since fleshed out the duties to include a full band. The music is uniformly rarified by Phillips' vocal strength and gentle nonchalance. It can be weird, sparse, and experimental in spots and lush and happy in others without an ounce of pretension or hand wringing. Think REM (before Stipe shaved his head) or The Red House Painters, with just a dash more quirk.

Monologue Bombs play Wednesday, March 17, 8 p.m. at Boulder Coffee, Brooks Landing, 955 Genesee St. Free. 454-7140.
