ROCK: Celebrating Queen (3/5)

Freddie Mercury was a consummate showman and had a vocal range and raw power that most rock singers would trade their soul for. Needless to say, trying to faithfully emulate Mercury's instantly recognizable sound is no small task, but JJ Midnight does a pretty fine job in his own right, replicating not just the range, but the tones and dynamics that were Mercury's signature. In order to fully flesh out the songs, JJ is backed by a chorus of equal talent, which allows the group to recreate the layered harmonies (like on "Bohemian Rhapsody") that are so tough to do in a live setting. It's a show celebrating Queen's musical achievements, a treat for anyone with a love of true arena-sized rock standards.

Celebrating Queen performs Friday, March 5, 8 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St. $15-$20. 546-3887, waterstreetmusic.com.
