Barrence Whitfield loudly and ferociously plays rock 'n' roll from that classic era when it was still a predominantly black menace to the white gentry (despite its overwhelming appeal to white kids). It was musically bodacious and lyrically salacious. Whitfield's unparalleled voice is big and baritone (incidentally, his real name is Barry White) but is frequently opened up to his trademark savage howl and shriek. Compared to Whitfield, Richard seems even littler. It'll make your sloe gin fizz, it'll make you're backbone slip. But don't confuse this with a revival. Barrence Whitfield is the real thing, baby. Dig yourself. Ow!
Barrence Whitfield plays Thursday, March 18 at 8 p.m. at the Bop Shop, 274 N Goodman St. $10. 271-3354
