Glorious, storied nights at summer bonfire parties and other, more dimly lit teenage subjects are the spiritual center of The Hold Steady's possessing songs. The band's bar rock-sound is heavily indebted to The Replacements and other smart, indie-rock forebears of the past. What The Hold Steady brings to the table is an adamantly positive vibe. Frontman Craig Finn is more of a narrator than a singer, and the yarns he weaves hit the gut, the heart, and the head. The band, approaching its fifth album, is at a pivotal point, with the new "Heaven Is Whenever" LP (out this May) as its first without core member, piano player Franz Nicolay, who recently left to strike out on his own as a modern-day vaudevillian. Expect live shows to be even more pared down and ragged.
The Hold Steady performs Monday, April 12, 8 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St. $18-$20. 325-5600
