Mercury Opera's upcoming production consists of two comedic one-act operas - Lee Hoiby's "Bon Appétit!" and Bach's "Coffee Cantata." "Appétit!" features Eastman faculty member Kathryn Cowdrick singing the role of Julia Child as she cooks her way through an "episode." The entire opera is based on a real telecast, right down to the actual chocolate cake that is produced by the end of the work. If you didn't figure it out from the name, Bach's "Coffee Cantata" has an equally food-centric theme - an addiction to caffeine. The cantata will be performed by Jan Opalach as Schlendrian, Kathryn Blomshield Lewek as Lieschen and Aaron Lundy in the role of the Narrator. The story revolves around a father's attempt to cure his daughter's coffee addiction by finding her a suitor, and the usual parent/child relationship problems ensue.
"What's the Buzz?" takes place Friday, April 16, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at Hochstein School of Music and Dance, 50 N Plymouth Ave. $10-$20. 473-6567, mercuryoperarochester.org.
