METAL: Eyehategod (6/16)

With its close ties to bands like Pantera, Down, Crowbar, Soilent Green, etc, legendary New Orleans sludgecore outfit Eyehategod was largely responsible for putting its hometown on the metal map in the early '90s. At the time, the band's combination of Melvins-inspired sludge with doom metal, putrefied Sabbath riffs and hardcore broke new ground. It would be somewhat misleading to call it "fresh," though, as Eyehategod made some of the most bleak, depressive (yet strangely witty) music the genre has ever seen. To this day, the band's misery has yet to be surpassed, and the vibe is so heavy you feel caked with mud after listening -- a good thing, of course, thanks to frontman Mike Williams's knack for pulling it off. Buffalo quartet Vessel brings some balance to the bill with a sound that matches the headliner in the screaming department but leans way over to the technical side of hardcore.

Eyehategod plays Wednesday, June 16 at 9 p.m. at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $15. 454-2966
