With a recorded legacy that spans almost 90 albums, it's pretty safe to argue that Frank Zappa's body of work now counts as a genre unto itself. The late bandleader/composer had such a distinct style and demanded such a high degree of skill from his musicians that bands that exist solely to perform his material fall closer to the spirit of classical repertory groups than cover acts. Appropriately enough, Detroit's Ugly Radio Rebellion formed in 2002 when guitarist/founder and Berklee graduate Scott Schroen put other musicians through trials to see which ones could "survive" the rigors of Zappa's music. Those who made the cut became Ugly Radio Rebellion. The band's main attraction is none other than recurring guest singer/guitarist Ike Willis, a longtime Zappa alum whose voice graces such classics as "Joe's Garage," "Thing-Fish," and "You Are What You Is". Triglactagon opens.
Ugly Radio Rebellion performs Thursday, June 3 at 9 p.m. at Lovin' Cup, 300 Park Point Dr. $10-$15. 292-9940.
