Scissors, a stapler, a rotary fan: those are just some of the instrument-objects songwriter DM Stith enlists on his 2009 debut, "Heavy Ghost," put out by collaborator Sufjan Steven's Asthmatic Kitty label. A graphic designer by trade (the Buffalo native earned a degree from Rochester's Roberts Wesleyan in the subject), Stith's unique pop orchestra has an analogue in his darkly expressive artwork, which adorns his albums. On previous tours, Stith has played acoustically, or been backed by a string quartet. This time he performs with Inlets, a tender orchestrated-pop project fronted by multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Krueger, who also open.

DM Stith w/Inlets play Friday, July 23, 8 p.m. at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $6-$8. 454-2966, bugjar.com.
