Relationships between players in bands are often times so personal that they mimic a family or even a love affair. In the past year, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad reconfigured and Tiger Cried Beef went on indefinite hiatus. That led to a number of impromptu jam sessions between GPGDS members Matt O'Brian and Rachel Orke and Dennis Mariano of Tiger. As a result, love is definitely in bloom, and a new local music family is forming in Thunder Body. Feel-good vibes emerge from fingertips on Fender Rhodes and melodica, roots reggae beats underscore it, and an experimental dub sound sphere develops with affected guitar, bass, and various well crafted noise elements. Sophistafunk, of Syracuse, embodies the same mission with its blend of funk and hip-hop.
Thunder Body, Sophistafunk play Saturday July 31 at 8 p.m. at Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $6-$8. 454-2966
