When the three Followill brothers - Caleb, Nathan, and Jared - spent most of their childhood traveling around the Southern United States with their Pentecostal preacher father, nobody expected them to twist themselves into one of the most unique and powerful music influences in modern rock. Now, as full-grown boys equipped with another Followill, cousin Matthew, on guitar, the Kings of Leon (the name is derived from their father and grandfather) have reinvented Southern rock to encompass the farthest reaches of country, indie, and alternative music. Lead singer Caleb is famous for his one-of-a-kind throaty ramblings, and drummer Nathan, lead guitarist Matthew, and bassist Jared can blend alarming complexity and technical ability underneath the surface of songs that can win a Grammy and hold a non-assuming poppy title like "Sex on Fire." The Stills and Built to Spill open.

Kings of Leon play Friday, July 30, 7:30 p.m. at Darien Lake PAC, Darien Center. $36.50-$56.50. 599-5040, livenation.com.
