When jazz legends like Benny Golson and James Moody played at the Rochester International Jazz Festival they wanted first-call musicians in their rhythm sections. That's why drummer Mike Melito got the gigs. He's also played with Chris Potter, Eric Alexander, Barry Harris - the list goes on. After four albums as a leader, Melito's reputation is spreading outside of Rochester; last year he was the subject of a feature article in DownBeat magazine. This week he'll be leading an excellent quartet at the Strathallan, featuring Mike Kaupa on trumpet, Bill Dobbins on piano, and Dan Vitale on bass.
Mike Melito Quartet plays Saturday, August 7 at 8:30 p.m. at Grill at Strathallan, 550 East Ave. Free. 461-5010
