SINGER/SONGWRITER: Walt Wilkins & the Mystiqueros (8/21)

Songwriting powerhouse Walt Wilkins did his time in Nashville, writing songs for others for 10 years before heading back for Texas and out of the grasp of the star-maker machine. Wilkins' music is honest and honestly ragged. You can hear the dust in the air around the various musicians as they crowd what I imagine to be an old ribbon mic. Even with his band plugged in, there's a loose earthiness that is as beautiful as it is defiantly raw. You might even call it outlaw country, especially if you spin it with some of Billy Joe Shaver's acoustic stuff in the same sitting.

Walt Wilkins & the Mystiqueros play Saturday, August 21, 9:30 p.m. at Abilene, 153 Liberty Pole Way. $5. 232-3230.

No Way?! Walt Wilkins is coming to little old Rochester? THE Walt Wilkins?! I think I have everything this man has ever written. His voice is intoxicating. If there is a better roots writer out there, I have not heard him. And I saw from his website that he is in Buffalo on Friday too. I am dropping all my prior plans for this guy and The Mystiqueros. I'd cancel my wedding to see this man. Well....Maybe not. But you get the idea!

This is amazing. I had to read this 2 x to make sure it was right. Walt may be one of America's greatest living song writers. We may hzve to figure out a way to get to Buffalo tonight too. But we will definitely be at Abilene on Saturday.
