WBER celebrates 25 years of opening Rochester's ears to musical diversity with an equally diverse concert. SoCal group Jurassic 5 brought audiences an alternative view of hip-hop, and former member Chali 2na has been expanding that vision on his own. Fusing funk, rap, and hip-hop, he draws his influences from the concrete jungles of Chicago and LA. Chali has collaborated with various stand-outs, including Mos Def, Beenie Man, Talib Kweli, Anthony Hamilton, and Damian Marley. In his own words, "I want to free people's asses and let their minds follow. To not be preachy, but to make them aware of what I'm about. I want to enlighten, but I ain't trying to be a bumper sticker either." Rochester's Subsoil and Hassaan Mackey round out the celebration.
Chali 2na performs as part of the WBER 25th Anniversary Party Wednesday, September 8, 8 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St. $12-$15. 232-8440, waterstreetmusic.com.
