As members of the Grateful Dead, percussionist partners Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart explored vast expanses of the rock ‘n' roll wilderness, helping the legendary band constantly chart new musical territory. Now, as the heart of The Rhythm Devils, Kreutzmann and Hart have extended that experimental tradition by taking rock drumming into the unknown by playing polyrhythmic unpredictability with a wide variety of percussion instruments. The band eventually developed into a full-fledged group, adding Keller Williams and Davy Knowles on guitar and vocals, Sikiru Adepoju on talking drum, and Andy Hess on bass.

The Rhythm Devils play Thursday, September 9, 8 p.m. at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St. $30-$35. 325-5600, waterstreetmusic.com.
