ROOTS ROCK: Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women (9/8)

The last time hardcore troubadour Dave Alvin blew through town, Chris Gaffney was in his band, The Guilty Men. Gaffney died in April 2008, leaving a void that Alvin filled up with "Man of Somebody's Dreams: A Tribute to Chris Gaffney" in 2009. At the same time "Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women" dropped as well. Alvin is easily the best roots rock-Americana songwriter of our generation, moving from stark folk, to western swing, to full-bore rockabilly - a genre he helped resuscitate as a founding member of The Blasters back in the 1980's. The Guilty Women is a top notch, all-gal, all-ringer outfit featuring Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Christy McWilson, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris, and Lisa Pankratz, who admirably keep up with Alvin. The question is, can he keep up with them?

Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women perform Wednesday, September 8, 8 p.m. at Montage Music Hall, 50 Chestnut St. $25-$30. 232-1520.
