CLASSICAL: Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra (8/15)
By Brenda Tremblay on Aug. 6th, 2008
With the price of gas, it's a commitment to zip southwest to Chautauqua. But this week, it'd be worth the two-hour drive. Stefan Sanderling leads the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra through two diverse 20th-century landmarks, Rachmaninoff's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor" (with prize-winning pianist Alexander Ghindin as the soloist) and "L'Ascension" ("The Ascension") by organist, birder, and composer Olivier Messiaen, a Frenchman who championed a "living music, having the impetus of sincerity, generosity and artistic conscientiousness."
