ROCK: Ra Ra Riot (9/6)

Don't let the comparisons to early U2 give you the wrong idea. Yes, some of Ra Ra Riot's beats immediately bring to mind the signature drumming of Larry Mullen on classics like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Bullet the Blue Sky." But this Syracuse six-piece does an excellent job of putting that familiar sound in a fresh context all its own. The band also indulges in standard indie-dance beats, but plays with enough energy and enthusiasm to make you want to dance. More importantly, it dresses those beats up with loads of inventive touches. Violinist Rebecca Zeller and cellist/vocalist Alexandra Lawn in particular color the music in several subtle and obvious ways that set the band apart.

Ra Ra Riot plays with Walter Meego and Jon Moses Saturday, September 6, 9 p.m., at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $8-$10. 454-2966.
