The Memorial Art Gallery has built a shrine to Russian icons. On exhibit through January 4, "Tradition in Transition: Russian Icons in the Age of the Romanovs" displays what were once church ideological decorations, but are now seen as the great Russian art form. The exhibit is comprised of three private collections from Marjorie Merriweather Post - founder of the Hillwood Museum & Gardens and an organizing partner for the exhibit - and two other private collections. The Rochester companion show, "Subverting the Sacred: The Face of Lenin," is a collection of works from University of Rochester graduate and former U.S. Foreign Service member David Rittenhouse.
Events and programs for the exhibitions include an all-day symposium (November 15), family day (November 16), a cooking demonstration and dining experience (December 4-5), and concerts featuring Russian liturgical music (December 6 & 11). The Gallery, located at 500 University Avenue, is open Wednesday-Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday until 9 p.m. Admission costs $4-$10, with a Thursday night reduced price of $6 5-9 p.m. Call 276-8900 or visit mag.rochester.edu.
