When it's cold out, the last thing I want to do is trek up a mountain or paraglide across the Russian steppe with an eagle. I may not be a nature enthusiast, but I still enjoy watching movies about other people taking on the great outdoors. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour stops by RIT's Ingle Auditorium this month, bringing with it more than 10 films having to do with mountains, adventure, or magic helmets in some form. Tentative selections include "The Red Helmet," where a fearful young boy discovers a magic helmet in the woods that leads him on a crazy adventure; "Silent Snow," which preaches about the harms of pesticides and pollution carried to the arctic by northbound waves and wind; and "Flying with Eagles," a film that examines paraglider Louise Crandal's harrowing goal of gliding over the Russian steppe with an eagle.
The festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, February 21 and 22, with showings each day starting at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10-$12 and are available at the Gordon Field House Box Office, ticketmaster.com, or by calling 475-4121.
