The terms "Grateful Dead" and "memoir" don't usually mix, but in Peter Connors new book, "Growing Up Dead," the two become synonymous. In the mid-80's at age 15, Connors discovered the band while growing up in suburban Rochester. His book chronicles his first show on June 30, 1987, and his subsequent treks to nearly 100 shows nationwide, as well as his on-the-road family that traveled with him in a beat-up Volkswagon camper. The book also tackles the psychedelic culture of love, music, and drugs, the struggles to find enough money to get from show to show, and Connors' eventual emancipation from his parents. As Connors says in his own words: "this is the story of a street-level deadhead."
Connors will read from and sign copies of "Growing Up Dead" on Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 3349 Monroe Avenue in Pittsford. The event is free and open to the public. For more information visit growingupdead.com.
