Get ready to paint the town red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. It's time for the annual Rochester Pride Week, running now through July 19. Rochester will celebrate gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender pride with stage shows, musical performances, a picnic and the second-largest pride parade and festival in New York state (Manhattan's is number one).
It's a big year for this area tradition, as it marks the 20th anniversary of Rochester Pride Week and the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, when homosexuals and police clashed at the Stonewall Hotel in New York.
Sue Cromwell, executive director of the Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley, said the group hopes to bring everyone together by making this year's Pride Week as diverse and accessible as the Rochester community is by providing handicap parking and translators for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The Gay Alliance of Genesee Valley kicked off this year's festivities last weekend with the raising of the rainbow pride flag at City Hall, but there are still plenty of events to show your pride at.
