Humans and animals, wild and domestic, have a curious and ever-changing relationship. There's alternately fear, respect, and appreciation between the two worlds. It's subject matter like this - the associations between society and the animal kingdom - that inspired "Animal Logic: Artists Contemplate Creature Kingdoms," an exhibit on display at SUNY Brockport's Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery (180 Holley St). "Animal Logic," curated by gallery director Tim Massey, contains works of all sorts. One is a sculpture of a dog wearing a clownlike outfit of suspenders and heeled blue boots. He (she?) is juggling miniature versions of other beasts, also costumed. Maybe a statement on our sometimes misguided notion of pets as playthings? Other works include "Your Vow Your Holy Place" (pictured), an almost reverent painting by Rachael McCampbell, and "Upstream," a piece of art by Lisa Merida Peytes, who aims to conjure the past, present, and future in her work.
"Animal Logic" is on display through December 6 at SUNY Brockport's Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery. For more information on the gallery or the exhibit, call 395-ARTS.
