The term "craftivism" comes from Betsy Greer, a writer who in 2003 envisioned an environment where art could speak out and find its voice in activism and social awareness. This concept is the cornerstone of the Second Storie organization, a small group of local women committed to bringing together edgy, independent art and artists in the community. Second Storie will host two events this week, including screenings of the documentary "Handmade Nation," and a two-day independent arts and crafts market just in time for the holidays.

The screening of "Handmade Nation" will be presented Friday, November 27, at 7 p.m. (and again on Friday, December 4, at 8 p.m.) at Visual Studies Workshop (31 Prince St.). A panel discussion will be held after this week's screening, with artists and crafters who will share their success stories of making it in the indie art biz. Tickets for the screening are $5; you can order your ticket online at secondstorie.bigcartel.com.

On Saturday and Sunday, November 28 and 29, Second Storie will host its annual indie market with work from more than 30 local vendors. The list of items sold includes handcrafted jewelry, paintings, posters, custom embroidery, vintage pins and magnets, posters, clay pottery, digital illustrations, holiday cards, ceramics, and more. The event will take place on Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m., also at the Visual Studies Workshop. For more information on vendors and merchandise at the market, visit secondstorie.net.
