Back in high school and college, a shop called Irish & Celtic Imports in Pittsford Plaza subsidized my shenanigans. I worked there maybe 30 hours a week, and much of that time was spent selling Celtic jewelry. You learn quickly that if a piece is covered in intricate knotwork, it's Celtic. Though different people will tell you the knots mean different things, the general consensus is that they're all symbols of ever-flowing, continuous life. You can study some of the more elaborate knots for hours, and never find the beginning or end.

You can find out more about Celtic art and the mythology behind it when Stephen Walker, of Walker Metalsmiths Celtic Jewelry, speaks at the Irish American Cultural Institute-sponsored event "Mythology of Celtic Art." It takes place in the Wegmans School of Nursing, Room 102 at St. John Fisher College (3690 East Ave) on Thursday, November 19. The lecture starts at 7:30 p.m. and costs $10, but if you're a member of the Irish American Cultural Institute, it's free.
