It is the height of the Prohibition Era, and two murderesses are put on death row for murder, duking it out to escape the tainted American justice system with a little bit of help from a corrupt, sweet-talking lawyer and a bribable prison matron. The musical "Chicago" is known for its heavy-hitting dance numbers and powerhouse tunes, like "All that Jazz," "Cell Block Tango," and "Razzle Dazzle." And it'll razzle-dazzle audiences this week at the Auditorium Theatre.
Based on the true story of 1920's murderesses Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner, the musical non-stop provocative scenes with a satirical take on greed, adultery, murder, and the pitfalls of celebrity infatuation. Look for stage and screen star Tom Wopat ("The Dukes of Hazzard") in the role of lawyer Billy Flynn.
The production, brought in by the Rochester Broadway Theatre League, runs now through Sunday, November 15, at the Auditorium (885 E Main St). Show times are Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 & 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 & 7 p.m. Tickets cost $32.50-$64.50.
