In the Christmas classic "It's a Wonderful Life," there's a scene where it all comes together for George Bailey. He's overwhelmed with the spirit of the season, so much so that he shouts "Merry Christmas" to anybody and everybody that's around.
That's the idea behind the annual George Bailey 5K. You take to Rochester's East End and spread Christmas cheer by belting "Merry Christmas" while tearing through the streets. Some points to note: 1. It's not actually a race; 2. It's definitely not a 5k (more like 5-10 blocks, or less than one mile); 3. It'll take place no matter what the weather is like; 4. You can show up dressed as one of the characters from the movie, or in whatever you've got on.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event, and it happens on Friday, December 18. Sign up is at 7 p.m., and the race starts at 8 p.m. at Java's Café (16 Gibbs St). The race ends at Mex (296 Alexander St), where people usually stick around for further merriment. There's a suggested $10 donation, and proceeds go to St. Joseph's House and Camp Daydreams.
