Many of us would like to block out the egregious interim jobs we had to endure as a young 20-something. But writer and comedian David Sedaris ironically launched his career by recounting one of his prior jobs, a Christmas elf at Macy's department store in New York City. In his short story "The Santaland Diaries," now adapted to the stage by Joe Marillo, Sedaris describes the epitome of a slacker's life: an employer in a Santa suit, taking out frustrations on both parents and children at his seasonal gig. But the story has a silver lining, and the last "Santa" to make it up to the throne may very well be genuine and atypically caring.
David Jason Kyle stars in the local production of the one-man show, which runs through December 19 at Blackfriars Theatre (795 E. Main St). Tickets cost $15-$25. For a full list of show times check blackfriars.org, or call 454-1260 for more information.
