Since roughly the age 13 I've been teased for writing in cursive. "Nobody uses cursive anymore," my friends would tell me. Students from SUNY Geneseo are disproving that assumption with the school's "25th Annual Calligraphy Exhibition," which opens on Monday, January 25.
Calligraphy is typically used nowadays only to add flourish to wedding invitations and memorial inscriptions, but the art form dates back as far as the 16th century, and has been widely practiced in cultures all over the world, from India to Japan to South America.
If you're dazzled by the skill level of the student works, you can learn how to create this kind of fancy typography yourself. The Penmanship and Calligraphy Club meets at the Barnes & Noble in Pittsford (3349 Monroe Ave.) at 7 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month to demonstrate and discuss different techniques.
The calligraphy exhibit runs at the Bridge Gallery in Brodie Hall on the Geneseo campus through March 1, and is open daily 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Call 245-5813 or visit geneseo.edu for more information.
