DANCE: “Bridge of Sighs” (2/4-6)

By Rebecca Rafferty on February 3, 2010

Oh, the battle of the sexes: some people sing about it, others blog about it, but Kate Weare dances about it. Her work is a well rounded portrayal of the complicated power struggles between man and woman: playful, erotic, joyful, detached. She is able to convey the shifting, nuanced tones of relationships, and with her background in martial arts informing the movement, the battles sometimes lean toward violence.

Weare and her company of New York City-based dancers will present "Bridge of Sighs," a quartet drawn from the images and history of various bridges, including the titular bridge in Venice from which convicts waved their final farewells to their families before entering prison. "Drop Down" is a sexy duet between a man and woman who negotiate erotic power through proximity.

The choreographer and dancers will present three performances from Thursday, February 4, through Saturday, February 6, each starting at 7:30 p.m. in the College at Brockport's Hartwell Dance Theater, Kenyon Street, in Brockport. Tickets cost $20 ($8 for students) and are available by phone at 395-2487. For more information visit brockport.edu.
