There is a phenomenon within this state - especially upstate - where college graduates have been moving away in record numbers, leaving New York with a lack of educated workers that is not replenished. This trend is known as the "brain drain," and theories about its causes range from lack of local jobs to overburdening taxes to simply the realization that warmer climates actually exist.
Whatever your belief, you can join in on the discussion at "Retain the Brains: Keeping College Grads in Rochester." Guest speaker Maria Thomas Fisher will discuss what is being done to keep grads here, as well as local initiatives to attract other bright young adults from outside the area. Her experience as part of the leadership of the Rochester Young Professionals organization should also bring a unique viewpoint to the issue.
"Retain The Brains: Keeping College Grads in Rochester" will take place Thursday, February 25, at the Central Library's Kate Gleason Auditorium, 115 South Ave. The lecture is part of the Thursday Thinkers series, and runs 12:12-12:52 p.m. Admission is free.
