First Friday is the monthly city-wide gallery night held by non-profit, university, and commercial and indie art venues in Rochester, where we all trot about from station to station, filling our eyes and ears with what's new and exciting in our community. From 6-9 p.m. (and sometimes later) you can check out art openings, poetry readings, and musical performances in various locations. Visit firstfridayrochester.org for a list of this month's participating venues, and check out all the fliers in cafes and such for more events happening the same night. Highlights of the March edition include:
The Main Street Artists' Co-op, a collective of 18 artists who work in a variety of media and subjects, will show their stuff at Studio 458 in the Hungerford Building (1115 E. Main St., enter door 2). Resident instructor Sari Gaby will present a live portrait-drawing demo, and the Roger Eckers Trio will perform live jazz 6-8 p.m.
Two members of The Sweet Meat Co., St. Monci and MR. PRVRT, have a graffiti- and street art-based show of works opening at 1975 Gallery at Surface Salon (658 South Ave.).
Genesee Pottery (713 Monroe Ave.) will present "The Walking Hour," with richly patterned functional ceramics by Sean O'Connell.
The Visual Studies Workshop (31 Prince St.) continues its exhibitions "Small Dreams and Possessions" by Sue Huggins Leopard in the VSW Bookstore and "An Alternative Process," prints by Ivan Dalla Tanna in the main gallery.
And Greenwood Books (123 East Ave.), will host a poetry reading by Leah Zazulyer at 7 p.m.
