Soapbox-car racing is an enduring piece of Americana that has been around since the early part of the 20th century. This weekend you can see the action up close as Rochester will host one of the All-American Soap Box Derby's races at the Main Street Armory. Racers will be coming from the all over the northeast in order to compete for a chance to make it to the world championships in Akron, Ohio, this summer.
For those who don't know, soapbox car racing is when children (for the purposes of this competition, ages 8-17 only) construct and maintain small race cars to race with. The cars are powered only by gravity and are all constructed using kits. The Main Street Armory race will be taking place indoors, so visitors shouldn't have to worry about getting frozen, or racers getting stuck in the snow.
The Greater Rochester Soap Box Derby will be held at the Main Street Armory on Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14, starting at 8 a.m. with weigh-ins and inspections starting at 7 a.m. Free for spectators. For more information call 261-8881, or visit grsbd.com or aasbd.org.
