World music that centers on percussion has had an undeniable, if normally subtle, influence on western rock. One of the greatest examples of this is the band Rusted Root, whose rockin' ways are anchored by African, Caribbean, and other global styles. Former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan will bring his percussion experience to this year's Day of Drumming event on Saturday, March 20. The day will feature two distinct workshops, the first focusing on yoga, chants, and breathing exercises combined with drums. The second workshop will focus more on technical aspects of drumming, as well as exploring different cultural styles. They will also be separated by a veggie potluck lunch at noon, where everyone can bring and share their favorite dish. The event is open to people of all musical skill levels and drums will be provided.

The Day of Drumming takes place on Saturday, March 20, at the Tango Dance Café at 389 Gregory St. The event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.; the veggie potluck runs noon-1 p.m. A single workshop costs $35- $45, while the full event pass costs $65-$80. Pre-registration strongly suggested at jimdonovandrums.com, or by calling 323-2898.
