With a history as rich as Rochester's, and names like Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass gracing its tombstones, Mt.

Hope Cemetery offers a look back at the heyday of our city. But the above mentioned civil rights crusaders aren't the only historic names to have their final resting place in the hilly graveyard; an immense collection of Civil War soldiers and veterans are also buried there. On Saturday, July 31, at 12:30 p.m. author Brian Bennett will team with historian Marilyn Nolte for the Friends of Mt. Hope's annual Civil War tour. The tour begins at the cemetery's north entrance. Admission is $4, free to members of the Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery organization.

If you're not into Civil War history and just want to learn more about this historical treasure trove, Mt. Hope Cemetery also hosts twilight tours all summer long. For 90 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6:30 p.m., anyone can come down and enjoy the walk, the scenery, the history, and post-tour refreshments. Admission is $4 for non-members and free for members. For more info on all Mt. Hope Cemetery events, visit fomh.org.
