If you visit Macedon this weekend, you're likely to see a lot of flannel and bushy beards. No, I'm not talking about hipsters, but real, live lumberjacks. On top of professionals competing in the timber sports, the 28th Annual Macedon Center Community Lumberjack Festival, at the Macedon Center Fireman's Field on Canandaigua Road, encourages local lumberjacks to come out and participate. To be honest, I had no idea there were local lumberjacks.
The festival opens at 8 a.m. Saturday, September 11, and Sunday, September 12, and admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors, $1 for kids ages 6-14, and free for children 5 and under. Both days will feature crafts and collectible sales, rock climbing, and activities for kids. On Saturday, an amateur competition begins at 9 a.m. and will include log rolling, two-man crosscut, buck saw, chain saw, log chop, and tree felling. All equipment and safety gear will be provided. At 5 p.m. a greased pole climb will commence. The pole will be covered in Crisco, ensuring that hilarity will ensue, so wear throw-away clothes if you plan to participate. On Sunday at 10:30 a.m., the professional competition begins, and open events include hot saw and ax throw. For more information, call 315-986-3732, or visit macedoncenterfire.org.
