Summer is starting to perceptibly wane, so it's time to get out and make the most of the remaining beautiful weather. If you don't yet have plans for Labor Day, take a day trip over to Letchworth State Park in Castile, and experience the rambling gorge-ousness of the "Grand Canyon of the east."

The state park holds numerous free interpretive programs and hikes every month, focusing on local flora and fauna, but on Monday, September 6, at 10 a.m., a two-hour, mile-long guided geology walk will focus particularly on the history and formation of the natural wonder. Meet by the octagon building at the Lower Falls parking lot, past the Cabin Area "B." Expect lots of steps and muddy spots, so dress appropriately. Stay for a second, shorter hike at 12:30 p.m. and hear "How the Gorge was Formed: Story of the Park." Meet at Inspiration Point parking lot for this hour-long, quarter-mile hike. Also taking place at 2 p.m. is the two hour, mile-long "Glen Iris Estate Walk," for which participants should meet at the Museum. Parking fees may apply. For more information, call 493-3625.
