"Amadeus" is Latin for "the love of God," and is the aptly given middle name of charmed child prodigy-turned-immortal composer Wolfgang Mozart. It's also the title of a play about his life, penned in 1979 by Peter Shaffer, which will be performed on Geva Theatre Center's Mainstage this fall. The play follows the rise, shenanigans, and downfall of Mozart, and draws from rumors of his jealous rival Salieri's attempts to sabotage the younger composer's career.

Mozart's frenemy will also get a little limelight; as a bonus, Salieri's 12-minute comedy opera, "Kleine Harlekinade," will be performed by Mercury Opera Rochester prior to selected performances of "Amadeus," and will be included in the ticket price of the feature show.

"Amadeus" kicks off with previews starting Tuesday, September 7, at 7:30 p.m. and continues through October 3. Tickets cost $22-$59; to make reservations or for more information, call 232-2382, or visit gevatheatre.org.
