The paintings no longer hang on clotheslines (they used to, back when the festival started in 1957), but you can still see hundreds of works by regional artists at this year's M&T Bank Clothesline Festival, taking place on the grounds of the Memorial Art Gallery. Besides admiring and purchasing paintings, sculptures, food, and miscellaneous baubles, the Clothesline Festival is a chance to catch local artists, musicians, or maybe your neighbors; it's a great place to people-watch. Spend the day - or the whole weekend - and you'd be hard-pressed to get bored. This year's live entertainment shows include such varied acts as hula dancing, performances by the Rochester Gay Men's Chorus, NeoCollage, harpists, live radio broadcasts, student art shows, award ceremonies, and more.

And if you're artistically inclined, try your hand at City Newspaper's Smock-Painting Contest, with a first-place prize of $100 for adults, and cool art supplies for kids.

The M&T Bank Clothesline Festival runs Saturday, September 6, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, September 7, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission costs $5, which benefits the Memorial Art Gallery. Children 10 and under are free if accompanied by an adult. For more information visit mag.rochester.edu.
