It's that wonderful time again, where the scent of lilacs fills the air as people fill Highland Park for the annual festival that bears their name. Although this year we may not be graced by Her Garden Majesty Martha Stewart, there are still plenty of reasons to partake in the festivities. Running Friday, May 9, until Sunday, May 18, the fest offers myriad activities daily starting at 10:30 a.m., all for free. Highlights include opening ceremonies Friday, May 9, at noon; the Lilac Parade Saturday, May 10, at 10;30 a.m.; the Lilac Festival Arts & Crafts Show Saturday-Sunday, May 10-11; Latino Day on Tuesday, May 13; Lilacs N Senior Day Wednesday, May 14; a farmers market, Wine N Blues, and the Gala in the Park Thursday, May 15; the Art in the Park Art Show Saturday-Sunday, May 17-18; and the Lilac 5K and 10K races Sunday, May 18.

One thing that is not free, but certainly worth the $5 admission, is the chance to tour the Ellwanger Garden. Open only for special occasions, the garden is a "living museum" of horticulture of more than 100 years by the Ellwanger family. Originally the private garden of George Ellwanger, but now maintained by the Landmark Society of Western New York, the garden will be open to the public Friday, May 9, through Sunday, June 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Call 546-7029 to schedule a tour.
