Posters for this daylong African festival advise to "bring a friend, a drum, your wallet, and a lawn chair," and I can't think of a better list of handy things to have around, festival or no. SANKOFA is a nine-hour-long, unity-promoting event that also touts the importance of creativity and self-determination, among other values. The wide range of offerings that'll be on hand include soul food, poetry, dance, youth performances, vendors, art, the Civil Rights Bus, and more. If somehow you manage to get bored, you can always use of that drum you brought along. It takes place Saturday, August 23, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Village Gate (274 N. Goodman St), and admission is free.
This year the festival gets an early start on Friday, August 22, with "An Evening of Theatre and Jazz" at Dazzle Theatre, 112 Webster Ave. The program starts at 7:30 p.m. and showcases the work of three Rochester-area playwrights. The evening will run you $10 in advance, $15 at the door. You can get tickets through Mood Makers Books or Kaiyum Gallery. Call 271-7010 for more info.
