You don't have to know anything about violins to have heard of a Stradivarius. Violins crafted by the Stradivari family are considered the crème de la crème of the stringed instrument, and the term "Stradivarius" has gone on to represent excellence in any field. Like "CSI: Cremona," Dr. Joseph Nagyvary has conducted a 30-year investigation of the famed instrument. His research claims to have found the "lost secrets" contained in the wood and wood finishes. He further claims these secrets have enabled him to make new instruments comparable in quality.

On Thursday, September 4, Nagyvary will present his lecture, "Raiders of the ‘Lost Secret': Modern Science and the Holy Grail of the Stradivarius," concluding with a performance by noted violinists Rebeca Boyd and Vincent Reale. The musicians will play an old Cremonese violin and a newly made instrument based on the doctor's research. The comparison will give the audience a chance to decide whether his research has been done in vain, or if Nagyvarius will be the new expression of excellence.

The free event takes place in Kilbourn Hall, 26 Gibbs Street, at 7 p.m. A reception follows at 8 p.m. Go to esm.rochester.edu for more info.
