RECREATION: Erie Canal Events (7/8)
By Dale Evans on Jul. 2nd, 2008
With the rising cost of gas, many people are planning vacations close to home, or forgoing them altogether. If that's the case for you, consider Cycling the Erie Canal. For eight days you can pedal your way along the scenic waterway from Buffalo to Albany. The tour includes informed guides, historical presentations, entertainment, meals, and camping accommodations. It begins in Buffalo on Sunday, July 6, and arrives in Albany the following Sunday; the pace is considered family friendly at 50 miles a day. Too much? Then sign up to ride for only one of the two weekends. Helmets, tents, and basic camping gear are required. Cost runs from $100 for a weekend jaunt to $520 for the long run. For a full schedule and to register go to ptny.org/canaltour.
If you'd rather sit stationary, the canal also kicks off its 18th annual fishing derby on Tuesday, July 8. Registration must be purchased at least the day before you submit a catch for one of the more than $20,000 in prizes. Fish must be caught by rod and reel or hook and line in the waters of the Erie Canal. Go to the website at ericecanalderby.com for detailed rules. You've got until July 20 to catch the big one.
