Big, burly, flannel-wearing men wielding dangerous equipment? Sounds like a weekend back home. Whether or not the men and women in attendance actually fit the lumberjack bill, Macedon's 26th annual Lumberjack Festival has lots to offer. You can stop by just for the lumberjack-worthy breakfast of flapjacks, and then stick around to catch the amateur competitions - basically, people roll logs and fell trees. The greased pole climb could be especially interesting to watch. On Sunday, the competition gets bumped up a notch when professional, world-class athletes take part in such ominous-sounding events as the axe throw, hot saw, and the underhand chop.
If you get bored with all the timbersports, you can wander among crafts and collectibles for sale, peek at the exhibitions of log-cutting equipment, fireplaces, and log carvers, or chow on food all day long (with homemade pies for dessert).
The Lumberjack Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, September 6-7, at the Macedon Center Fireman's Field, Canandaigua Road, Macedon. Call 315-986-3732, or visit macedoncenterfire.org for more info.
